Lake District Cafes
So, whether you’re seeking a morning caffeine fix before the day’s adventures, or a celebratory cake (or two) after you’ve conquered a bucket list fell, the Lake District has plenty of fantastic cafes from which to choose. Read on for a list of some of our favourite Lake District cafes close to Birkdale House. Homeground, Windermere A favourite with locals and visitors alike since 2015, Homeground’s hearty brunches, bakes, and brews are perfect before a day exploring the lakes and fells. Everything (except the bread, sourced from the award-winning Lovingly Artisan) is made from scratch on site, and the creative menu changes seasonally. Walk-ins only, but the queue usually moves fast – and is always worth the wait! Chesters by the river, Skelwith Bridge Another spot with something of a cult following, Chesters by the River’s plant-based menu caters to all tastes, and is well-worth a trip to the foot of the picturesque Langdale Valley. Enjoy wood-fired pizzas, homemade salads and sandwiches and cakes on the riverside deck before taking a stroll up to admire Skelwith Force waterfall – or following the path further up to Elterwater. Takeaway is also available, and the adjoining shop is the perfect spot to…

Winter Walks from Birkdale house
Brant Fell Brant Fell lies right at the heart of the Matson Ground, and just a few hundred yards (as the crow flies) from Birkdale House, so it’s a relatively easy walk. The views from the top are stunning and well worth any effort. You can be there and back in under an hour, so it’s the perfect way to start the day – or to catch the sun setting over Windermere. Orrest Head Orrest Head is said to be the place where author and fell-walker, Alfred Wainwright, first fell in love with the Lake District. And once you reach the top, it’s easy to see why. The views of the Lake District fells and Lake Windermere are breathtaking. It’s a little under two miles to the summit of Orrest Head. Simply head into Bowness and follow Lake Road up to Windermere. The path to Orrest Head begins opposite the Windermere Tourist Information Centre and has been fully tarmacked, making it accessible for those with wheelchairs and prams. The Dales Way The Dales Way runs through Matson Ground, and is only about 150 metres from the front door of Birkdale House. How much of the 80-mile trail you walk is…

Winter on Matson Ground Farm
It’s been looking very Alpine here for the last week, with a few inches of snow sticking around for over seven days. We have been supplying the sheep with additional feed out in the fields, to see them through the snowy spell.

The house was perfect, meeting all our requirements. We didn’t want to eat out so we really appreciated the kitchen and dining room and the kids loved the outside spaces and the basement which was a blessing for us as well as they kept disappearing requiring very little input from us!
We had a wonderful New Year with the family at Birkdale. The house is beautiful and very well equipped – the best we have found in the Lake District . It was the perfect retreat.
Thank you for a fabulous long weekend stay at Birkdale House in Windermere. Perfect location for a group of friends to catch up and luxuriate in the beautiful spacious home and the idyllic rural surroundings.
The house is terrific – careful thought and attention has been given to every aesthetic and practical detail.
We loved the property. It exceeded our expectations. The house was spotless and the position couldn’t have been better.
We had the most wonderful week at Birkdale House.
The house itself is beautiful and set in such a wonderful large garden with a view right down to the lake and over the surrounding hills. It’s so peaceful and quiet there, despite being just 10 minutes walk from the town of Bowness, it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere.
I was particularly impressed with the Big Green Egg barbecue outside on the terrace where we spent plenty of time as we were so lucky with the weather.
Our luxury last minute Christmas break that was so very much needed. Birkdale House was utterly amazing. As a family of four with two children, it had everything you needed and more. Amazing house, amazing amenities, amazing location, not to mention the views! And I’ve never seen a holiday house so clean!
I can’t thank you enough for making our break so relaxing and special.
There is a real “wow factor” to the first sight of the main building and gardens, and it feels like you are transported back in time to a much grander era. Once inside, each room is superbly furnished, and truly luxurious.
We had a wonderful weekend at Birkdale House for my husband’s special birthday. The house is very much a home from home with all the creature comforts you could need with a little bit of added luxury.
We have all thoroughly enjoyed a family holiday in this beautiful old Lakeland house this week. All the rooms are tastefully decorated with a clever blend of traditional and modern touches. Everything you need is provided. We loved the white towelling robes. We celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary in style with a black tie dinner in the lovely dining room
What an amazing week at Birkdale house!!
The location of the house was perfect. Set within private grounds in what felt like rural countryside but was only a ten minute walk from Bowness town centre and a five minute drive to Booths!
Every detail has been carefully considered and the result was a wonderful stay with all the amenities we could require. The small details of welcome hamper, freshly cut flowers within the house and bathrobes was a real treat.
A luxury, long-weekend in the Lake District and definitely to be repeated. Birkdale House is an absolute delight – comfortable, elegant and spacious. Perfect for a long weekend with friends and family.
The stay was amazing. We were so pleased with the house and can’t thank you enough for the great support.
We will be back 100% guaranteed and would recommend the place to any of our friends.
Beautiful house with lovely private grounds and an amazing location close to Bowness. Thoroughly recommend to anyone and we have already booked to return later this year.
The house is stunning – the gardens, the furnishings, the very well equipped kitchen- all made for an environment to relax and chat, cool and share food and walks from the door. We were welcomed with an excellent hamper of locally sourced food. We sat outside on the terrace for drinks and when it got cooler in the evening relaxed by the log burner. Remarkable how the house is at once cosy and spacious. Many many thanks for such a terrific long weekend.
Absolutely beautiful house and setting. We loved everything about our stay and fell in love with this incredible property from the moment we stepped through the door. Thank you for a fabulous weekend, we can’t wait to return!
It was truly excellent. To the team, I cannot thank you enough for the amazing stay and the way you looked after us. Nothing was too much trouble. Birkdale was truly beautiful with every detail thought of. The house was incredibly well equipped and luxurious.
